Abstract

Criminal prevention policies necessarily affect safety in all neighborhoods at the same time, given the existing spillovers these policies entail. Thus they affect not only absolute but also relative safety in each neighborhood. This analysis studies how the perceived relative safety of one’s own neighborhood affects neighborhood satisfaction, which is one of the determinants of life satisfaction, and finds there is a diminishing marginal utility of relative safety.

Resumen

Dado que las políticas adoptadas para prevenir el crimen en un vecindario particular determinan los incentivos de los potenciales delincuentes, éstas afectan la seguridad de todos los vecindarios a nivel agregado. Se desprende de aquí que dichas políticas no solo afectan el nivel de seguridad absoluto si no también el relativo. Aquí estudiamos cómo la percepción de seguridad relativa en el propio vecindario influye sobre la satisfacción con el vecindario, que a su vez es uno de los determinantes de la satisfacción con la vida, y encontramos que existe una utilidad marginal decreciente en esta variable.
